During the festival, the village fills with merchants, pilgrims and hundreds of nat mediums, known as Natkadaw or Nat Ka Daw who can communicate with the Spirit (Nat in Burmese) as spirit intermediaries in order to see into your future like fortune tellers. The focus of the festival is a shrine containing statues of two brothers, Shwe Phyin Gyi and Shwe Phyin Nge, who were executed by a vengeful King Anawrahta for failing to carry out their duties to bring the brick while everyone was called on to donate a single brick to the project in order to build a religious structure called the “Pagoda of Wishes” in the village of Taungbyone. The pagoda still stands at Taungbyone today – complete with a space for the two missing bricks that the brothers failed to provide.

Worshippers at this festival believe that their business and personal life will improve after participating in the festival. Accommodation at Taungbyone is usually arranged in monasteries free of charge but pilgrims are encouraged to give a donation to the monastery. Foreigners who plan to travel to Myanmar during this period and would like to join the festival may contact their travel agents in overseas or arrange with local travel agent upon arrival.
